PORTLAND, Ore. — With Earth Day just around the corner, thousands of volunteers organized across Oregon for a spring clean-up day on Saturday.
According to SOLVE, an Oregon non-profit dedicated to the environmental stewardship of the state, more than 2,000 people participated in local cleanups in towns such as Astoria, Bend, Medford, Pendleton, and Portland.
There were multiple trash pickup groups working across the city. On Portland’s Central Eastside, more than 60 volunteers collected roughly 3,200 pounds of trash, including more than 160 needles from the Eastbank Esplanade and surrounding area, according to SOLVE.
Elsewhere, members of Portland Fire and Rescue joined the Forest Park Neighborhood Association for their cleanup event. Staff members also helped educate people on how to prepare their homes in case of a wildfire.
Together, volunteers picked up a combined 22,256 pounds of trash in honor of Earth Day.
This year Earth Day falls on Thursday, April 22.
